Reading is critical to the success of all students. In an effort to meet the needs of struggling readers at the middle school level, Rockdale County has implemened a researched-based reading intervention program titled, Scholastic Read 180 Program. Read 180 is designed to meet the needs of older students reading below grade level. The program helps get students back on track to reading at grade level which in turn builds self-esteem.
Have you ever seen a student “do a 180?” It’s a complete turnaround. Understanding replaces confusion. Confidence replaces embarrassment. Motivation replaces frustration. Success replaces failure. Read 180 is designed to raise the reading levels of struggling readers in transitional third grade through twelfth grade. Read 180 is designed to provide individual instruction for all students. This instruction is delivered through customized instructional software, high-interest fiction and nonfiction novels and/or audiobooks, and systematic direct instruction in reading skills, vocabulary, writing, and grammar.
Read 180’s Instructional Model provides a simple way of organizing instruction and classroom activities. The day begins with Whole-Group Instruction, followed by three small-group rotations and ends with a time for reflection during Whole-Group Wrap-Up. (See diagram below)
