The 2014 General's Reading Challenge!
Dear Parents of DMS Eighth Graders:
Have you wondered what happened to the timeless tales you read in school – those unforgettable novels by the likes of Defoe and Dickens and Cooper and Crane? You will be happy to know that they are flying to the foreground at General Ray Davis Middle School. Novels by these authors, as well as Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Johann Wyss, Jules Verne, and William Shakespeare have become the anchors of a new program for our high-achieving Golden Eagles called The General’s Reading Challenge. Is your child up for the challenge?
Through the Reading Challenge, eighth grade students will select and read novels from the Reading Challenge booklist. Students who complete three novels during the remaining months in this school year will receive recognition at year’s end. Students will document their selections on the Reading Challenge Reader’s Log. Due to the complexity of a number of the selections, students are encouraged to check out a companion book for a parent to read with them.
While we encourage all eighth graders to participate, participation in the Reading Challenge Program is voluntary. The Reading Challenge will run from March 7, 2014 until May 7, 2014. All Reading Challenge Logs are due to language arts teachers no later than Friday, May 9th. Certificates will be awarded at the Build-Your-Own-Sundae Celebration during eighth grade lunch on Thursday, May 15th. Names of participants will be added to our permanent Reading Challenge display in the DMS Media Center, leaving a legacy of your child’s commitment to learning.
We are very excited to offer this opportunity for our Davis eighth grade students to broaden their horizons by revisiting some of their parents’ literary favorites. We look forward to your child’s participation.
