 Summer Reading

All students are encouraged to chose books based on their Lexile® measures which can be found on both the CRCT and the Georgia High School Graduation Test score reports.  "Find a Book, Georgia" is an online program created by the Georgia Department of Education to help students easily find books that are appropriate for their reading level and interests.  To utilize this program, please visit http://georgia.lexile.com.
Though RCPS middle and high school students are expected to select a literary text from the lists provided, read during the summer, and present a project during the third week of school, the district does not designate the same type of summer reading for elementary students.  The Nancy Guinn Library, Rockdale’s public library, encourages younger students to read a variety of books by participating in its summer reading program.  Our district recommends this program for K-5 students as well as the library's summer events.  For program details, visit http://www.rockdale.public.lib.ga.us/index.php/youth-services.  For a schedule of the library's summer activities, please choose one of the links on the right side of this page that begins with "NG".
According to the American Library Association, there are significant benefits to participation in summer reading programs which include:
• the encouragement that reading become a lifelong habit;
• an opportunity for reluctant readers to be drawn in by the activities; and
• a pathway for children to maintain and improve current skills.
In our own county, one elementary student increased his reading skills by four grade levels during one summer.  When his teacher asked how he gained such strong skills, he explained that he joined his family in visiting the library every day!
