We BELIEVE that family is the most important factor in the development of the individual.
Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities. The involvement includes ensuring that parents play an integral role in assisting their child's learning; that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child's education at school; and that parents are full partners in their child's education and are included, as appropriate, in decision making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child.
Parent Academy
In August 2011, RCPS held its first Parent Academy at RCA. The academy was designed with the intention of providing information from which parents and guardians can benefit and it is open to all Rockdale County residents who are interested in the success of children. The theme for this school year is ‘Make a PACT (Parents and Children Together) and Be There for Your Child." Be There is a national campaign designed to inspire families to be more involved with their child's education. Please visit the Parent Academy website to view the list of sessions that will be offered at Parent Academy 2, which is March 10, 2012!!

Helping Your Teen Cope With Peer Pressure
This workshop is designed to help parents address negative peer pressure most teens are exposed to as they develop through the transitional stages of adolescence. During this time, parents often feel helpless and teens feel like their parents don’t understand the challenges they face. This workshop will help parents identify some of the reasons teens often succumb to peer pressure, identify common types of peer pressure, and learn of ways they can help their teen succeed in this area.
Communicating With Your Child and Teen
This workshop will help guide parents in using innovative strategies to overcome conversation barriers they may encounter with their child and/or teenager. Effective communication is key and many parents do not realize the strain various words and actions can have in developing a nurturing relationship with their child. In addition to identifying several common barriers to effective communication, this workshop also provides parents with some key solutions.
All materials will be provided to you following the session so you can redeliver the information in your schools and districts. Future webinars will highlight various promising practices across Georgia from local school and district PICs, teacher and administrator professional development modules, and make and take workshops. The calendar for the monthly webinar series is attached.
