 Board of Education

The Rockdale County Board of Education is composed of seven members who serve four-year terms. Board members are elected bi-partisan and charged with making all major decisions regarding system policy, curriculum, expenditures, and facilities and construction.

Vision for Public Education in Georgia
At their regular meeting in March 2011, the Board adopted a resolution declaring their support of the work of the Vision Project, a partnership between the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association working to improve the education culture in the state of Georgia.

Board Meetings
The Board of Education meets in work session on the second Thursday of each month. These meetings, which begin at 7:00 p.m., are open to the public and are held at the Administrative Offices, 954 N. Main Street, Conyers, Georgia. Notices of all meetings are posted at the main entrances of The Administrative Offices and also appear in the local newspaper, The Rockdale Citizen. (Review the 2012 Meeting Schedule.)

Board Meeting Agendas
Agendas for all Board of Education work sessions and regular sessions are available to the public through eBoardSolutions. Agendas are typically posted at the meeting site the day before the meeting.

Citizen Participation
Visitors to Board meetings who wish to address the Board may do so by completing a form which is available before the start of any regularly scheduled meeting. Visitors' comments should be brief (3 minutes) and to the point. Criticism of school system personnel is not appropriate at public Board meetings.

Board Duties
The Board acts officially only as a group. No one acts in the name of the Board except when authorized by the Board at large to do so. Additionally, it is the Board's responsibility to:

  • Provide tax monies for maintenance and operation of the schools
  • Submit bond issues to be voted on by the people of the district.
  • Appoint the Superintendent as its chief executive officer.

Board of Distinction
The Rockdale County Board of Education has been recognized by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) as a Board of Distinction. In order to receive this recognition, the Board had to comply with the GSBA Standards for Local Boards of Education, which includes meeting strict requirements in several areas. Visit GSBA to learn more about the program.

Superintendent's Duties
The Superintendent is appointed by the Board and functions as the chief executive officer to administer the operation of the schools and oversee the implementation of Board policies. The Superintendent is also an advisor in keeping the Board informed of the operation and progress of the various programs of the schools. The Superintendent is available to the Board as a professional resource; and the Superintendent's recommendations normally precede Board action on questions relating to the operations, staffing, and financing of the various programs of the schools.
